ERASED TAPES CELEBRATE 10TH ANNIVERSARY AT END OF THE ROAD

Erased Tapes continue their tenth anniversary celebrations, with a takeover of the beloved Piano Stage on Sunday at this year’s End Of The Road. We are thrilled to welcome avant pop veterans Penguin Cafe, genre defying piano prodigy Douglas Dare and brand new signing, the Icelandic singer and composer Högni.

On February 5th 2017 Erased Tapes opened the doors to their new East London home, marking the 10th anniversary by introducing their fans and the public to the new Erased Tapes Sound Gallery. Initially founded by German-born Robert Raths in 2007, the London-based label has grown and extended across the world with satellite offices in Los Angeles and Berlin. Spanning over ten years, Erased Tapes has nurtured avant-garde artists from all around the world, while retaining their experimental and truly independent spirit.

We are also delighted to announce that New Jersey born multi instrumentalist Laraaji will be the final artist joining BBC Radio 3 Late Junction’s takeover of Friday evening on the the Tipi Stage. Discovered by Brian Eno while he was busking in Washington Square Park with his custom made electronic zither, Laraaji went on to release the seminal album Ambient 3: Day Of Radiance produced by Eno. With a new album due this year, we can’t wait for him to bring his unique blend of transcendental jazz and new age ambience to Larmer Tree Gardens.

Last but most certainly not least, we round off this year’s line up with Japanese noise-rock behemoths Bo Ningen and rebellious, fiercely independent French and Italian noir garage rockers J.C.Satàn. With their pulverising, breathless live shows, Bo Ningen have been described as sounding like ‘a lightning strike on a clear day’. They have wowed us before in 2011 and 2013 and we’re delighted to welcome them back. First timers J.C.Satàn’s music is all dark and shredding guitar tones, abstract lyricism, and screeching vocal delivery. They’ve been compared to “Queens Of The Stone Age backing Serge Gainsbourg”, all swaggering no wave riffs crashing into each other to create the most fantastic sonic shapes.

In addition to all this, throughout the four days, there will be the usual array of surprise performances, one off collaborations and secret sets – presented in collaboration with The Line of Best Fit – that have become End of The Road’s trademark. BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction presenters will be at large around the festival with artist led workshops and a late night DJ set from Nick Luscombe. Plus the usual array of after hours fun and dancing to be had at the Silent Disco, The Disco Ship and a very special ‘Midnight Mass’ hosted by Loud & Quiet (with very special guest DJ’s to be announced) will take place following Father John Misty’s headline set on Saturday night.

We’re incredibly excited to not only reveal this year’s Cinema programme, but also bring you news of a complete face-lift for The Cinema itself. Revamped, relocated and revitalised, prepare to fully immerse yourself in a Twin Peaks-inspired wonderland which we’ll celebrate the opening of with a David Lynch double-bill on Thursday evening (with Blue Velvet preceding a screening of Twin Peaks‘ original pilot episode). This will be the highlight of a day filled with Americana cult classics, from the more recent Hell Or High Water, to the iconic Paris, Texas.

We will also be joined by Delia Derbyshire…The Myths & Legendary Tapes director Caroline Catz, to talk about her portrait of an unconventional British electronic music pioneer, while Natale Tsipori will be on hand to take questions about the Low Anthem documentary Am I The Dream or The Dreamer?. The cult budget ‘anti-rom com’ Brakes’ director and writer Mercedes Grower will be in conversation with one of the co-stars Seb Cardinal of Cardinal Burns, ahead of his turn on this year’s Comedy Stage.

End of The Road will also be venturing further into musicals territory this year. From the weird Rain The Colour Of Blue With A Little Red In It, a reimagining of Purple Rain by Mdou Moctar (who plays the Tipi stage for Late Junction on Friday) to the sublime Hedwig And The Angry Inch, and the classic Mary Poppins.

And the kids will be alright with some great animations in store, including Kubo And The Two Strings followed by a Sunday night French language double bill with the acclaimed My Life As A Courgette – premiered at Cannes Film Festival this year – and the beautifully animated non-dialogue cycling comedy, Belleville Rendez-Vous.

2017 Comedy & Literature Line Ups Revealed!

We are very excited to reveal this year’s Comedy Stage, boasting a strong and diverse line-up with our usual blend of stand up, sketch, character, musical comedy and political satire. First up, a duo that need no introduction following their award winning Channel 4 sketch show, we are thrilled to have Cardinal Burns performing at this year’s festival. Fresh from their wildly popular and anarchic monthly residency at the Moth Club in Hackney Cardinal Burns Presents…, which has earned a reputation as one of the most exciting nights of comedy around and has seen the likes of Steve Coogan regularly in attendance, be prepared for a show where absolutely anything goes.

We are delighted to welcome back The Adam Buxton Podcast for a second year, featuring Adam’s renowned ramble chats with very special guests to be announced, live from the Comedy Stage. You can listen to last year’s interview with Bridget Christie recorded on the Piano Stage now and Adam has since interviewed the likes of Brian Eno and Zadie Smith, as well as a number of Hollywood actors and high profile comedians. Radio 4 and Have I Got News For You regular Nish Kumar will perform for this the first time at End of The Road, having had a phenomenal rise since hitting the Fringe as a solo act in 2013. Consistently lauded for his satirical, and politically topical stand-up, Kumar’s hour Long Word… Long Word, … Blah Blah Blah… I’m so clever was nominated for an Edinburgh Comedy award in 2015.

Ever wondered what post-punk cabaret might look like? Well wonder no more as Die Roten Punkte, whose unique brand of musical comedy has been compared to the White Stripes and Kraftwerk, hit the Comedy Stage this year. Expect some catchy song pastiches that embody all that’s right (and maybe wrong) with Europop, with some uproarious jokes and outlandish physical comedy in between.

As if that wasn’t enough, we are also thrilled to announce this year’s Literature line-up, showcasing some of the most acclaimed, fascinating and moving writers around. As usual, during the morning of each day of the festival, we will be welcoming a selection of authors to read from and discuss their work at The Library Stage. We have curated a diverse line-up this year that ranges from Throbbing Gristle founding member Cosey Fanni Tutti discussing her autobiography Art Sex Music, to Mike Heron from The Incredible String Band (who have influenced the likes of Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and David Bowie) reading from his recent memoir You Know What You Could Be: Tuning into the 1960s.

We also welcome revered new author Amy Liptrot, whose stunning debut book Outrun was a Sunday Times bestseller, Radio 4 Book of the Week and won the Wainwright Book Prize for nature and travel writing. Last but certainly not least, we have visual artist and surreal comedy writer Miriam Elia, whose hilarious satire on the modern art world in the form of a Ladybird book We Go To The Gallery has become a global phenomenon, selling thousands of copies worldwide.

Bill Callahan Revealed As Third Headliner And More

Bill Callahan has been revealed as the third headliner for End of The Road 2017. The seminal and singular songwriter will play his only UK festival this year and his first ever performance at End of The Road. The man formerly known as Smog, whose recent exceptional album Dream River was one of 2013’s finest, is one of America’s defining voices. We expect to be quietly devastated by his laconic and powerful songs when we hear them live in the magical setting of Larmer Tree Gardens this September.

We are also thrilled to announce shoegaze legends Slowdive –  whose first album in 22 years is due out in May – will be joining us to headline the Big Top on Thursday night. They will be joined on Thursday by The Moonlandingz – a fictional band with a story as entertaining as their music, who have now become a reality thanks to two members of Fat White Family.  They describe themselves a “cosmic synth krautabilly group doing fuzzy Joe Meek-style pop” – but playing live they become even more rock’n’roll with singer Lias Saoudi, aka Johnny Rocket, a fantastically acerbic front man perpetually on the verge of either collapse or combustion.

We like to keep things in the family at End of The Road, so this year we not only have the critically lauded Waxahatchee, AKA Katie Crutchfield, unofficial leader of the DIY indie punk scene and purveyor of voice-of-a-generation songwriting, we also welcome her supremely talented sister Allison Crutchfield. Both are renowned for their captivating live shows so we’re very excited to have them both at this year’s festival for the first time, and fingers crossed for a live PS Eliot reunion… We can dream!

Also joining us for the first time we have the sublime Moses Sumney. We’ve been a long time fan since his star turn on Beck’s Song Reader – his version of ‘Title Of This Song’ was a standout among many established artists who contributed, his voice being one of those remarkable instruments; rich gorgeous and effortless.

Psychedelic explorers Pond will be making a very welcome return to Larmer Tree Gardens, following their standout set in 2015. With their highly anticipated new album The Weather due in May, we can’t wait to see what they have in store this time around. Hopping across the ocean to neighbouring New Zealand, we have the  bewitching talent of 4AD signed Aldous Harding, her bleak and beautiful eponymous debut album balancing fragility with raw charm.

Adding to the already packed list of exciting newcomers, we are thrilled to have the excellently named PWR BTTM dropping in on an unsuspecting Larmer Tree audience – turning gender politics into loud, infectiously positive, glorious rock music centred around what it means to be young and queer and confused. Melbourne’s Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever are poised to take over the airwaves with their charging drums, addictive bass lines and ridiculously catchy melodies. The fact their debut EP came out on Sub Pop says it all! We’re definitely set for a thrilling show. And a thrilling weekend all round!

Line Up additions:

Bill Callahan
Slowdive
Japandroids
Pond
Baxter Dury
Waxahatchee
The Moonlandingz
Moses Sumney
Timber Timbre
Alex Cameron
Daniel Romano
Blanck Mass
Allison Crutchfield and The Fizz

2017 Headliners Revealed!

We are so excited to announce the first round of bands for End of The Road 2017!!Father John Misty

Father John Misty will make his first ever UK festival headline appearance at End Of The Road. Since 2012, Joshua Tillman has emerged as a singular and idiosyncratic voice. Whether by virtue of his polarising, witty lyrics, his ‘intimately berzerk’ live performances or the infuriating line he seems to tread between canny and total fraud, Father John Misty has carved out an enigmatic position for himself in the musical landscape. With a new album Pure Comedy, due in April, we can’t wait to see what he has in store for the Woods Stage.

Joining the good Father is firm festival favourite Mac DeMarco, who returns with his delicately demented pop to play his only UK festival this year. Last seen presenting us with our tenth birthday cake on the Garden Stage before staging a full on cake fight, the shambolic, crowd-surfing maverick Mac announced a new album last week and to say we’re excited to have him all to ourselves, is a massive understatement.

We’re honoured that multi-Grammy award winning legend Lucinda Williams will be bringing her pioneering songwriting to Larmer Tree Gardens for the very first time. Following the universally acclaimed 2016 album Ghosts Of Highway 20, End of The Road is the only festival where you will hear her spellbinding songs brought to life, taking in aspects of Americana from Blues and Honky-Tonk, Gospel and Soul to Folk and Rock.

Following Lucinda Williams’ lead will be the Seattle based artist Courtney Marie-Andrews, who counts the likes of Ryan Adams and Damien Jurado among her fans. Julie Byrne’s startlingly beautiful voice will surely bring the festival to a standstill, while acclaimed newcomer and ex Little Big League guitarist Japanese Breakfast brings her blend of dark lyrics and blissed out pop melodies. We are also delighted to have Norwich multi-instrumentalists and purveyors of ‘sludge-pop’ Let’s Eat Grandma, whose alluring strangeness extends to their live show. Dancing, rapping, recorder solos… it’s all there and we can’t wait.

New York via Texas punks Parquet Courts, who provided the soundtrack to our excellent launch video, make their second appearance at End Of The Road following their breathlessly exciting show in 2013. After last year’s brilliant Human Performance – which was more melodic, more personal and angrier than anything they’d done before – we’re in for another treat. Fellow punk and one-man dynamo Ty Segall also returns to see us for the second time, playing utterly joyful rock’n’roll, without the irony but with all the passion. Not one for half measures, his live show is an over-the-top howling assault on the senses that is as gloriously bewildering as it is exciting.

We are very pleased to welcome back the unique Perfume Genius, whose performance in 2014 left us speechless; those already delicate songs, and the not so delicate ones, laid entirely bare. His new album should be revealed soon, and we can’t wait to fall in love all over again. Fellow Seattle based songwriter Car Seat Headrest also joins us with material from recent album Teens Of Denial – a heady distillation of introversion and aggression, vulnerability and playfulness. Live he covers everyone from The Cars to Frank Ocean, as well as ripping through his own original material.

California indie duo Foxygen will play for us at last. Their long awaited new album Hang features contributions from the Flaming Lips’ Steven Drozd, Matthew E. White, the Lemon Twigs and more. Speaking of Lemon Twigs… the ultimate critics pets have gone from playing New York bars to signing a record deal with 4AD within a year, receiving praise from as far and wide as the Zombies to Questlove. They’ve already played with Foxygen and Car Seat Headrest, so we’re happy to keep the gang together at End of The Road 2017.

Thank You from End Of The Road Festival!

End of the Road would like to say a HUGE thank you to each and every person who came down to this year’s festival. You all made the 11th edition an absolutely incredible one. We are still reeling from all the surprises and once in a lifetime performances!

The Shins opened the festival with their first show in three years. Bat For Lashes threw a wild wedding reception and orchestrated an on stage marriage proposal. We danced until we dropped with Jon Hopkins while stunning secret shows from Wild Beasts, Phosphorescent and Ezra Furman thrilled audiences all weekend. We laughed through the rain with the help of Adam Buxton, Stewart Lee and Bridget Christie. We’ve loved every minute of it and we can’t wait to see you all next year.

Early Bird tickets go on sale at 7am tomorrow morning.
