Calling Oliver Coates a cellist doesn’t really do justice to his supreme talents. His releases include a solo electronic dance record (Upstepping), a record of improvisations with Mica Levi (Remain Calm), and a recording of John Luther Adams’ Canticles of the Sky. His most recent solo record is probably his best: Shelley’s on Zenn-La, an album of electronic music influenced by Aphex Twin, melding dance music with avant-electronic and classical instrumentals. It’s the mark of the artist Coates is, and the sonic worlds he creates; rich, sensational music unrestricted by convention. He’s taken this sense of adventure on tour supporting Radiohead (who he’s also collaborated with) and the shows are as thrilling and enthralling as his records.
