When Happyness played here back in 2015 we knew we were watching a special band. Their debut album Weird Little Birthday had charmed us with its wit and irreverence, and live their songs shone even brighter. Then came their second record, Write In, which was even more richly layered while maintaining the wry sense of humour that we’d come to love.

They’re a band that makes you remember why you fell in love with alt-rock in the first place (think Yo La Tengo and Pavement), with songs full of cracked, vulnerable vocals and charmingly laid-back guitar riffs – just listen to “Falling Down”. Although founding member Benji Compston has now left the group, more of this gorgeously off-kilter rock is on its way and we can’t wait to see them at Larmer Tree Gardens again.
