HELLO FRIENDS!

Welcome to the twelfth edition of Undercard, our weekly music roundup, featuring the best new releases from this year’s artists and beyond.

This time (and a day early): Glastonbury coverage of a number of our artists, our new podcast, an upcoming book from Rebecca Lucy Taylor, new singles from Joy Orbison, For Those I Love, and Greg Freeman, the debut Cubzoa LP, on-site electrician and piano tuner roles and more.

Watch Self Esteem’s full Glasto set

→ Hundreds of thousands of music fans descended (and ascended probably) on the fields around Worthy farm last weekend for Glastonbury. Thankfully for those of us who weren’t there the BBC’s coverage was excellent as ever. Head to iPlayer to see full sets by EOTR2025 artists Self Esteem, Father John Misty, Caribou, Black Country, New Road, Goat, and Katy J Pearson as well as individual tracks from Getdown Services and For Those I Love.

→ We launched a new podcast series today to share author talks from last year, recorded live from the festival. Hosted by our literature curator Julian Mash, the series is called Talking Heads and features thought-provoking conversations, readings, and reflections from a brilliant lineup of authors, critics, and artists. In the first one you’ll hear an interview with Lucy Jonesabout her book Matrescence: On the Metamorphosis of Pregnancy, Childbirth and Motherhood and elsewhere in the series Simon Raymonde, Marchelle Farrell, Jon Moses, and more offer unique takes on creativity, culture, nature, memory, and music.

Rebecca Lucy Taylor aka Self Esteem is releasing a new book called A Complicated Woman on October 30th, “a cathartic scream of a book that gets to the heart of being a woman in the world today”. Pre-order it here.

Uwade sat down for a chat with Jason Crane of radio station 1061 The Corner to talk about her latest album Florilegium.

For Those I Love – Carving The Stone

For Those I Love (David Balfe) released new single “No Scheme” and announced his second record Carving The Stone will be out August 8th on September Recordings. He said about it “No Scheme is the spiritual successor to Top Scheme, the only track on the new album with a direct link to the old. Anchored by the same chaos as Top Scheme, No Scheme trades some of its anger for despondency, its rage for reflection, while never fully leaving that original fire behind. Like much of the album it comes from, whenever it points the finger outwardly, it points it back inwardly too. Hypocrisy, complacency, and culpability are all present, but so too is a search for justice or meaning in an increasingly confusing time. A great deal has changed since I wrote it, but I feel as committed as ever to sharing it with you all.
Cubzoa (aka Jack Wolter, who you may have seen recently on Glasto’s Pyramid stage playing guitar for CMAT) announced the release of debut album Unfold In The Sky on Bella Union and put out a new single from it called “Choke”.

Greg Freeman dropped new single “Gallic Shrug”, a track lifted from his forthcoming album Burnover, which will be available August 22nd via Transgressive Records/Canvasback Music. Freeman says about the track, “I was trying to look up lists of ‘obscure expressions,’ as in like weird old phrases or proverbs. The first thing that came up was ‘Gallic Shrug,’ a kind of niche physical expression, usually associated with French people–to convey indifference or lack of responsibility. I couldn’t get that image out of my head. It’s a very personal song revolving around this very heartbreaking gesture.

⚉  Joy Orbison released a new track with Overmono called “Lippy”. featuring Montreal rapper Skiifall. It follows previous Joy/Overmono collabs “Bromley” and “Blind Date”.

Kurt Vile, who played our 2022 edition, announced a new EP that he made with Nashville songwriter Luke Roberts. It’s a five-track release called Classic Love and is out July 25th via Verve.

Ichiko Aoba, who put on a stunning show for us last year, played a set for KEXP and it’s as magical as you’d expect and then some.
