Through their 10 years White Denim’s sound has taken in soul, dub, psychedelia, blues, punk, prog and jazz. They started out on their debut, Workout Holiday, making raw garage rock and have now embraced southern rock and alt-Country to create the most jubilant soul music we’ve heard in a long time.
When drummer Joshua Block and guitarist Austin Jenkins left to pursue other ventures, James Petralli and Steve Terebecki spent a long time reassessing exactly what White Denim meant to them before making their latest – and seventh – record Stiff. It was their first truly live record and saw their ideas perfectly crystallised – it saw huge riffs paired with the tightest, most frenetic playing and is the sound of a band re-energised, revitalised and ready to show off their virtuosity and confidence. It is an album crammed with adrenaline-fuelled sing-alongs, and that means their return to Larmer Tree Gardens is going to be the most fun you can have.
