Sophie Allison began posting home-recorded acoustic songs to Bandcamp as Soccer Mommy in 2015. Now, having gathered additional instruments and confidence, she’s turned Soccer Mommy into a full-blown band – giving extra drive and depth to her sound – and signed to Fat Possum.
The 20-year-old’s debut album proper Clean is one of the finest records our ears have heard this year. It’s a sonically rich record, with dream-pop choruses sitting alongside emotionally naked acoustic tales. It’s full of contrast and dynamics, taking her to another level after last year’s bedroom-produced EP, Collection.
Most of all it’s open, emotionally deep and defiant – confronting disappointments with wit, heart and lyrical precision. And it’s a record which establishes her as one of America’s great young songwriters – one which we can’t wait to hear live.
