Over the course of three hazy, gorgeous albums, Real Estate have built a reputation for writing perfect pop songs – tracks that merge deft poetic lyrics with lush, irresistible melodies. Their fourth album Mind, the follow-up to their 2014’s near-faultless Atlas, will be released in March and only further confirms this gift.
The line-up may have changed (this is the band’s first full-length since the departure of founding member and guitarist Matt Mondanile, who left to concentrate on his Ducktails solo project) but the dreamy guitar washes and Martin Courtney’s soothing vocals remain.
It’s the sound of a band who are moving forward without looking back. The first track, “Darling”, is a signature summery mix of unhurried guitars, gentle synths, and laid-back drums. It keeps what Real Estate do perfectly and finds new, subtle ways to update it. And it means their show at Larmer Tree Gardens will be spellbinding.
