Omar Souleyman is one of a kind. Once a part-time wedding singer in Syria, he now has more than 500 live albums to his name and has wowed audiences at festivals across the world with his thumping blend of traditional dabke songs and electronic beats.
He’s collaborated with Björk and Four Tet and toured the world many times over, even played the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. Last year he released To Syria With Love, a heartfelt love letter to his home, built on a sleek, hypnotic sound and featuring the impassioned ballad “Mawal”, which serves as a plea for peace, and is a stand out in an album full of highlights.
It’s his brilliant live shows, though, which have made him a cult star. If you’ve experienced one you’ll know exactly why we’re so excited for him to play – if you haven’t then get to Larmer Tree Gardens for the most frenetic knees up you could imagine.
