In the crowded scene of Tuareg guitarists, Mdou stands apart. Taking the traditions of the genre and fusing it with psychedelia and electronica, he has proven himself to be a true innovator, willing to experiment and push boundaries. His original and unconventional style has won him accolades both in Niger and abroad and make his live shows something to behold. His 2008 debut album Anar was a breakaway success on the MP3 sharing networks of West Africa and he has since released two highly regarded albums. “Tahoultine”, one of the standout tracks from Anar, was later featured on the compilation Music from Saharan Cellphones and is a feverishly great introduction to his sound.
