For their latest and 13th studio album, The Magic, the genre-defying Deerhoof continued to play by their own rules. Written over a seven-day period in an abandoned office space in the desert of New Mexico (because, why not?), the band went in with nothing but their imaginations, and just played. The result is a magnificently eclectic cocktail of everything from electro-pop to heavy rock to punk to hip-hop.
But we shouldn’t be surprised – they’re a band who have spent the past 20 years crafting record after record of outstanding, off-kilter experimental rock music. Each is distinct, but also unmistakably and brilliantly like Deerhoof.
