New Zealand’s Aldous Harding was discovered busking in the streets by artist Anika Moa. Her star has been sharply rising since then – her bleak yet beautiful eponymous debut album balancing fragility with raw charm. Yet, though the songs may have been desolate, her bewitching live shows brought them to life in a warm and all consuming way.
And with new album Party (not an ironic title) inspired by Scott Walker and new love and released on 4AD, the songs – recorded with PJ Harvey’s right-hand man, John Parrish – have become more coloured in. Though first single “Horizon” – just her, three piano chords and dramatic harmonies – shows she’s not lost the power to be haunting too. It’s why we’re so thrilled she’s coming to play.
